What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a common but often misunderstood problem that many cancer survivors live with. If lymph nodes are disturbed during diagnostic or treatment procedures, protein-rich lymphatic fluid may back-up, engorging lymph vessels and causing swelling, tenderness, and pain.
Lymphedema most frequently occurs in the extremities but also happens in the trunk. Swelling in the arms, legs and trunk is treated through specialized lymphedema therapy (Complete Decongestive Therapy or CDT), which includes lymphatic drainage, bandaging, excercise, infection precautions and the use of compression garments and sleeves.
Although there is no cure for lymphedema, patients can find relief through Complete Decongestive Therapy, or CDT.
CDT includes manual drainage of excess lymphatic fluid, excercise, and infection control, followed by the use of compression garments. The use of such garments is medically necessary to maintain the positive results of CDT and to reduce the risk of infection.
What are the special needs of chest and breast lymphedema ?
A vast number of women suffer from lymphedema in the chest and breast area as a side effect of breast cancer surgery, treatment or diagnostic tests. Many others may be at a risk and not be aware of the fact. While lymphedema treatment or CTD is effective in relieving chest and breast lymphedema, on-going compression is often necessary to maintain the positive results of therapy. The need for compression garments for the chest and breast area has not been adequately addressed ... until now.
Why a special bra ?
Simply put, conventional bras are not designed to deal effectively with lymphedema or post-surgical discomfort in the chest and breast area. In fact, the skimpy silhouettes, thin straps, rigid non-stretch cups, limited adjustability and underwires found in conventional bras may even increase pain, irritate tender tissue.
